Mr. Kushell is a past President of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and, in 1978, the IFA honored him as "Franchising Man of the Year". He has since served on the Board of Directors of several franchise companies, including Century 21 Real Estate Corporation, PIP Printing, Entré Computer Centers and Protocol Message Management Centers (a Bell Canada subsidiary).

As a franchisee, in 1985 he owned the rights to six western states and, with a management team, developed and operated eight fast food operations until they were sold back to the franchisor in 1988.
He is a frequent guest lecturer, and has conducted and participated in numerous programs and seminars on franchising. He has written many articles on franchising and is quoted regularly in a variety of major business publications.
